I LOVE this season! I was reading my devotional tonight sitting in my dining room looking at Christmas tree, which by the way, is not the prettiest thing ever b/c it's filled with broken ornaments, but that's us! How fitting!
Not to get too deep, but I did a writing lesson with my students today about giving to those less fortunate. I had them pick three things that they own that they would be willing to give away to a child in need. The majority of my class said they would give their raggedy books, broken TVs, and other useless belongings. I was heart-broken of how non compassionate today's kids are. I only two say they would give warm clothes. One of mine, a very new student said she would give a someone a place to stay if they needed a home. This, b/c she is currently shacking up with her aunt and is living in a tiny house with 9 kids and three adults! It broke my heart that we don't teach our kids about helping others. I will be doing more lessons on character in my class with hopes of instilling some sort of giving spirit. Granted, they're 7 and 8 years old, but still.
On a lighter note...Gralynn had a great bday on Monday and we will have her party on Saturday. Here are some recent pics from December thus far..

I totally know what you mean. Sometimes I hear what my students say and it it so selfless that I want to make sure I grow my child in to those attributes.
Other times when I am horrified at their selfishness I want to run straight to the nearest homeless shelter with Emily and hope that when she is in fourth grade her heart will be more tender than those in my class right now.
Teaching surely lets us see the true contents of children's hearts... and it makes us hope for the best for our own at home.
